Getting a room right without overspending

The usual way a room goes wrong isn't bad taste — it's buying in the wrong order. A sofa, a rug and a feature light bought separately, on separate days, with no shared plan, rarely look like they belong together even when each piece is nice on its own. The ideas above are filtered by room and budget, but the sequence you buy them in matters just as much.

Measure the space and the biggest piece first — a sofa or bed that's the wrong scale for a room is the hardest and most expensive mistake to undo. Pick a palette of two or three colours, not five, before buying anything else, then layer in texture: a mix of wood, textile and metal reads as considered, while one material repeated everywhere reads as a showroom.

A sequence that actually works

Every idea above is matched to a UK retailer that actually stocks it — not a generic decor-blog mock-up — because knowing something exists is only useful if you can actually buy it.
